Perfect bound book printing is a process in which individual book sections are permanently joined together using specialist adhesive and then bound in either a softcover or hardcover binding.
Perfect bound books — types of bookbinding adhesive
In perfect bound books, two types of bookbinding adhesive can be used, each differing in properties and application.
EVA binding
This method involves joining book sections using a hot-melt adhesive based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. It offers a favourable price-to-quality ratio, although it provides slightly lower opening flexibility of the finished book block. Additionally, it is not recommended for coated papers.
PUR binding
PUR binding involves joining book sections using reactive polyurethane adhesive, combining the advantages of structural adhesives with the fast setting time of hot-melt adhesives. It provides significantly better opening flexibility than EVA binding, can be used with all paper types commonly used by publishers and offers high durability as well as resistance to changing temperatures. This is the standard solution used at Books Factory.
Why choose perfect bound book printing?
At Books Factory, we offer professional perfect bound book printing in both softcover and hardcover bindings. This solution is highly popular due to the publication’s aesthetic appearance, high durability (especially when PUR adhesive is used) and the possibility of producing books with higher page counts.
Additional advantages include more attractive pricing and shorter production times compared to sewn binding.
It is also worth noting that books with glued spines offer a high level of visual quality. This effect is particularly noticeable in PUR binding, where the adhesive layer is thinner — without compromising binding strength and while improving opening flexibility.
Perfect bound book printing — recommendations and technical requirements
When preparing a project for perfect bound book printing, it is important to consider several key aspects.
1. Inner margins. Perfect bound book printing requires appropriately wider inner margins. This is particularly important for books bound using EVA adhesive, which does not provide the same flexibility as PUR binding.
2. Recommended page count divisibility. For A5, A5+ and B5 formats printed on uncoated papers, it is recommended that the total page count be divisible by 6. For A4 format, the recommended page count should be divisible by 4, while for S6 and A6 formats it should be divisible by 8. If these requirements are not met, additional blank pages may be added at the end of the book.
