Die-Cut Window in Hardcover, Sewn Hardcover and Hardcover Wire-O Covers

Die-cut windows are an effective way to reveal part of the inside of a book. We offer two cutting variants:
  • Standard cut (90°) — the blade cuts perpendicular to the cover surface (straight vertical edge).
  • Angled cut (45°) — the blade cuts at an angle, creating a decorative bevel around the opening.

1. What will be visible through the window?
What becomes visible depends on the binding type.
  • Hardcover binding (Perfect Bound / Sewn)
   - The window reveals the endpaper.
   - Prepare the endpaper design so that the visible graphic is positioned correctly within the window area.

  • Hardcover Wire-O binding
   - The window reveals the first page of the book interior (or the last page if the window is placed on the back cover).
   - The first page of the book block must contain the correct graphic in the die-cut area.

IMPORTANT: For hardcover bindings, the maximum total book thickness is 50 mm.
2. How to prepare files

To precisely create the opening, provide a PDF file containing 3 pages:
Page 1: Cover artwork for printing.
Page 2: Preview file (cover artwork + die-cut shape overlay) used to verify placement.
Page 3: Die-cut mask only (vector shape, preferably filled, without cover graphics).

3. Safety margins

The cutting blade requires sufficient working space and cannot cut too close to the edges. Minimum distances:
  • From the spine: at least 30 mm.
  • From all other edges: at least 15 mm.

4. Shape limitations

Almost any shape can be cut, but there are physical limitations related to the cutting blade.

Standard cut (90°) – recommended:
  • Minimum sharp angle: 20°.
  • Minimum curve radius: 3 mm.
  • Minimum distance between cutting lines: 3 mm.

Angled cut (45°) – recommended:
  • Minimum sharp angle: 40°.
  • Minimum curve radius: 5 mm.
  • Minimum distance between cutting lines: 7 mm.
  • Important: In this variant, the edge of the mask defines the inner edge of the window. The visible opening on the cover surface will be wider because of the bevel.

Requirement for both methods: The die-cut shape must contain at least one straight line or gentle curve with a minimum length of 5 mm. This is required for the blade starting point.

5. Registration tolerance

Small shifts may occur during bookbinding processes such as mounting cover material onto binder board and casing-in the book block.
  • Tolerance: Up to 2 mm.
  • Important: Do not design lines intended to align perfectly between the cover and the visible interior through the window. Because of production tolerances, these elements may not align precisely and may appear visually incorrect.
