Binding Types

Choosing the right binding is essential for the durability and aesthetics of your book. In this section, we discuss the available binding types in detail — from perfect binding and saddle stitching, through sewn and glued hardcovers, to Wire-O and board books. Learn about the differences between them, their advantages, and which option will work best for your project.

Sewn Book Printing

Sewn Book Printing

Discover sewn binding used in both hardcover and softcover books. Thread sewing ensures excellent durability and lay-flat opening, making it ideal for albums and premium publications.

Perfect Bound Book Printing

Perfect Bound Book Printing

A popular binding type where the book block is milled and glued using strong PUR or EVA adhesive. Used in both softcover and glued hardcover bindings, ensuring high durability.

More About Binding Types

Discover the technical specifications of all binding types available at our printing company. We compare softcover bindings (perfect bound, booklet binding), hardcover bindings (sewn, glued) and special bindings (Wire-O, board books). Learn how book block thickness and paper type influence binding selection and final durability.

How to choose the right binding?

Choosing a binding type is one of the key decisions when designing a book. It influences not only the publication’s appearance, but above all its functionality and usability. In practice, it is worth considering:

  • book volume (book block thickness),
  • paper type and grammage,
  • intended usage (whether the book should open easily or remain durable for years),
  • the character of the publication — whether it is a practical book, album or collector’s edition.

The combination of these factors determines which binding type is the best solution.

Softcover bindings — lightness and versatility

Softcover bindings are the most commonly selected solution in custom book printing.

Perfect bound binding (PUR/EVA)

  • suitable for higher page counts,
  • provides good durability while maintaining flexibility,
  • used in most commercial publications.

Booklet binding (wire stitching)

  • ideal for thinner publications,
  • allows books to open completely flat,
  • frequently used for magazines, brochures and children’s books.

These are solutions balancing cost, durability and usability very effectively.

Hardcover bindings — durability and premium appearance

Hardcover binding is the preferred solution for publications intended to be more durable and representative.

Sewn binding (thread + glueing)

  • very high durability,
  • good opening flexibility,
  • used in premium books and albums.

Glued hardcover binding

  • a more economical alternative to sewn binding,
  • retains the aesthetics of hardcover binding,
  • suitable for many publication types.

This solution works particularly well when both appearance and long-term durability matter

Oprawy specjalne – konkretne zastosowania

In some projects, standard solutions are not enough — this is where special bindings become relevant

Wire-O

  • full flat opening,
  • convenient usability (e.g. calendars, notebooks, manuals),
  • functionality prioritised over traditional book aesthetics.

Board books

  • very high durability,
  • resistance to intensive use,
  • most commonly used for children’s publications.

These are solutions designed for specific ways of using a book — not just for appearance.

What influences binding durability?

Book durability does not depend solely on the binding type. Key factors include:

  • book block thickness — the thicker the block, the greater the stress placed on the binding,
  • paper type — stiffer papers influence how the book block behaves,
  • usage method — frequent opening, spreading or transport.

That is why binding selection should be based not only on the project itself, but also on how the book will function in practice.

What next?

If you have already selected a preliminary binding type, you can proceed to the calculator and check its influence on pricing and production parameters. For more complex projects, it is also worth consulting the binding selection — especially when combining multiple refinements or non-standard papers.
